THE THAMES WHALE The events in the Thames on Saturday 21st January 2006 really raised the profile of whales and dolphins in UK waters and of a superb volunteer organisation The British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) who up until now have worked outside the media spotlight to rescue numerous marine mammals around our coastline. The Thames Bottle Nosed Whale found his way up the Thames estuary into the centre of London one Friday afternoon in January. Millions of people spent Saturday unable to move from the news channels, Thousands of us were joined in the rollercoaster of emotions, joined in hope, and captivated by the sight of this beautiful animal, as we followed the rescue attempt via TV, the internet, and vantage points along London embankments. We all hoped desperately for a successful rescue but sadly the struggle for this whale was lost just a little way short of freedom.
Thousands of these beautiful creatures perish each year as a result of mans indifference, greed and at times out and out cruelty. To see everyone joined in the common aim of rescuing a tremendous creature such as this gave a huge lift to all those who genuinely care about what happens to our seas and to our planet as a whole.
Alongside BDMLR and WWF we also support The Born Free Foundation and The Elephant Nature foundation. We will be running more charity auctions in aid of our chosen charities on eBay shortly.
